PhD
students in the Institute for Astronomy have salaried research assistant positions
and work on a research project under the direction of a Professor or senior
member of staff. Admission to the PhD
program can occur at any time of year and is initiated by one of the Professors.
Interested students should either
contact a particular Professor or they can submit an application which will be
considered by all Professors. A list of
currently available positions and/or specific projects can be found here. Further information can be found on our Doctoral School page.
We typically advertise postdoc positions internationally (e.g. in the AAS Job Register) in the period October-December, conduct phone and/or in-person interviews in January-February, and generally make offers at the beginning of February for a starting date later in the year. Advertisements and further information for postdoctoral positions can be found here.
The ETH Zwicky Prize Fellowship is usually awarded annually and is for an independent research position. The selection follows the same schedule as describe above. More information can be found here.
The Institute hosts a number of externally funded staff holding personal grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation, the EC and ERC and other institutions. We welcome enquiries from interested individuals who would like to hold such awards at the Institute.
SNF
Professors and holders of ERC Starting Grants are appointed as fixed-term
Assistant Professors in the Department of Physics. As such, their candidature
for these awards must be approved by the Department before the application is
submitted. This process takes place
twice a year, and interested individuals are advised to contact any of the
Professors in the Institute as early as possible so that the necessary
procedures can be followed. As a matter
of policy, the ETH does not usually sponsor candidates for these two awards who
will have passed their 36th birthday at the time of appointment.
There are no open positions at the Professorial level at present.
